Hunter, Thief and job mode

Your job is chosen once per account, not per character, and a balance rule can stop you picking the popular side. What job mode changes, and why you get a second name.

Trade is the part of Silkroad that turns players against each other by design. Goods have to move between towns, Hunters escort them, Thieves take them, and the whole economy runs on whether a caravan gets through. Choosing a side is the first decision, and it is stickier than most people expect.

Choosing a side

  • One job per account, not per character. Pick on one character and every other character on that account becomes the same job.
  • It is chosen from the character select screen, and changing later is deliberately awkward.
  • If one job is ahead of the other by 10% or more of accounts, you cannot pick the more popular one until the balance recovers.

Job mode and the job suit

You are in job mode whenever you are wearing a job suit, bought from the job NPC of your side. Nothing about trade works until you are wearing one.

  • The suit goes in the job slot of the equipment window.
  • You need an alias, and you need to be standing in a town, to put it on.
  • You cannot equip it while in a party.
  • Equipping teleports you to the town portal.
  • The top of the screen switches from your character name and level to your job alias and job level.

The alias

In job mode you fight under a second name. This is the point: it keeps a fight on the road from following you into normal play, and it is why the person who just robbed your caravan is not obviously the person standing next to you in town tomorrow.

  • Create it at a job NPC. It cannot match your character name or an alias already taken, and it follows the same naming rules: up to 12 Latin characters.
  • An asterisk in front of it marks it as an alias rather than a character name.
  • Editing one costs a fee that scales with your level. Resigning from the job union deletes it.
  • Nobody can whisper, send a note to, or friend-invite an alias.

Party chat, open chat, party matching and the target window.
Shows your real name
Global chat, guild chat, union chat and the guild window.
Shows nothing
Your guild name is hidden entirely while you are using an alias.
